The political campaigns of 2008 in North Carolina are coming to Google.
Candidates in the races for both governor and lieutenant governor have bought ads on the popular Internet search engine, which cost a fraction of the amounts needed to run an ad on television or the radio.
The gubernatorial campaign of State Treasurer Richard Moore has been running Google ads for several months. His rival for the Democratic nomination is Lieutenant Governor Beverly Perdue. Her campaign bought Google ads in the past few weeks.
The ads pop up when a Google user runs a search for specific words, and they link to a candidate's Web site -- or a site criticizing a rival candidate.
