Alone in a small cell at the Caldwell County jail, former Buncombe County Sheriff Bobby Medford is waiting for his next appearance in court.
Earlier this month, federal prosecutors charged the longtime lawman with accepting money to protect an illegal video poker ring in western North Carolina. A judge has ruled he will be jailed until his trial, expect to begin sometime next year.
Medford will be in court on Thursday to determine his lawyer. His longtime attorney is already representing another defendant in a case connected to the indictment.
Officials in Caldwell County say that aside from the private cell for safety, Medford is treated no differently than any other prisoner.
