The Town of Princeville Turns 120 Years Old!

The Edgecombe County town of Princeville reached a milestone Friday. It's 120 years old! Princeville is the oldest town chartered by blacks in America. It was the nation's first town incorporated by freed slaves after the Civil War. More than 2000 people now live in Princeville, after a determined rebuilding process following Hurricane Floyd's floods in 1999. Birthday ceremonies were held at Saint Luke Church of Christ, with the cofounder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference as keynote speaker.
