NC House Speaker Hackney Has Cancer Surgery To Remove Prostate

House Speaker Joe Hackney has undergone surgery to remove his prostate after being diagnosed with cancer.

Hackney's office said the surgery was performed Friday morning at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. Hackney should be released this weekend and back at the Legislative Building early in the new year. Hackney's office said the cancer was diagnosed three months ago and appears to be limited to the prostate.

Doctors believe the 62-year-old Orange County Democrat shouldn't require additional cancer treatment. Earlier this year, wife of Senate leader Marc Basnight was treated for leukemia before dying in June.

State Senator Jeanne Lucas died in March, four years after being diagnosed with breast cancer. And House Majority Leader Hugh Holliman underwent lung cancer surgery in September.
