It was a special day Wednesday for six aircrews at Air Station Elizabeth City.
Coast guardsmen from four search and rescue missions were recognized for saving twelve boaters during adverse conditions in April and May. Rudy Snel was rescued off the coast of Wilmington. He says 40 to 50 foot waves put he and two fellow boaters in danger. Despite the heavy weather, a C-130 crew deployed its rescue swimmer and airlifted the three sailors to safety.
The swimmer Drew Dazzo says he's happy that both he and Snel were able to attend the award ceremony Wednesday. Dazzo received a gold star.
