In an effort to improve security for Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, base officials say the base's main gate is closed.
Officials say renovations to the main gate started Sunday and will last for at lease 60 to 75 days, affecting local traffic on both Highway 70 and Highway 101. Drivers will be rerouted to the Slocum and Cunningham gates. Cherry Point's Military Police are working closely with local and state officials to find other ways to reduce congestion as well.
