Beaufort County Friend Passes Away

A down east icon has died in Beaufort County.

Friday Ashley B. Futrell, Wilson native, pro-baseball great, senator, award winning former publisher of the Washington Daily News, and widely loved local, died at the age of 93. Futrell was well know in the media world as well being given the Pulitzer Prize for Meritorious Public Service journalism's highest honor. Saturday family members and friends gathered at his home in Washington preparing for his burial. His son says Futrell left him with many life lessons.

Public visitation for Futrell will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Washington Sunday. He'll be laid to rest by the Paul Funeral Home on Monday.
