State Representative Melanie Goodwin says she is expecting her second child during the 2008 General Assembly. She says she will be the first lawmaker to give birth while in office.
The Richmond County Democrat said this week that she is expecting the baby in April. It is her first pregnancy since being elected in 2004 to the seat previously held by her husband, Wayne Goodwin.
House Speaker Joe Hackney's office and the Legislature's informal historian say they know of no other previous female legislators who have given birth while serving.
