Almost 3,200 food stamp recipients in North Carolina use invalid or ineligible Social Security numbers, but that amounts to an error rate of less than 1 percent.
The Office of the State Auditor issued a review Wednesday that
found 1,906 food stamp recipients used Social Security numbers that
were not within range of valid numbers issued by the Social Security Administration.
Another 1,237 recipients were using numbers of a deceased person.
Those numbers amount to less than 0.2 percent of the more than 1.7 million recipients whose paperwork was reviewed.
The review concluded that the number of exceptions falls within
a statistically expected error rate when considering the size and
complexity of the food stamp program.
