Some schools across the state, including several here in the East, won't have to change their school calendar despite a new law pushing back the start date. The State Department of Public Instruction granted waivers for high schools only in Edenton-Chowan, Beaufort County, Martin, Edgecombe, Perquimans, and Nash-Rocky Mount. Officials said no to Halifax county high schools. Officials say the waiver was granted because the school systems generally miss more than eight days of school each year due to bad weather or there was a significant educational need.
