Waves Take Toll on Pier

The Outer Banks is taking a pounding from Mother Nature.

For two days, estimated waves of seven feet or more have slammed the shore, causing severe erosion in Kitty Hawk. Heavy surf claimed a 300 foot section of wooden bulkhead at the Kitty Hawk pier Tuesday. Designed to stifle erosion, all that remains of the original 420 foot retaining wall is a wooden skeleton.

The Atlantic Ocean gouged out huge sections of beach at both the pier, and some nearby beachfront cottages.
