Another state mental hospital is in danger of losing federal funds. This, after the federal government decided in September against cutting off
funding to Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro after officials addressed
State investigators told John Umstead Hospital in Butner they're
recommending that federal Medicaid and Medicare money be cut off
unless corrections are made within the next three weeks or so to
prevent patient violence.
Umstead Chief Executive Officer Patsy Christian didn't have many
details Wednesday because she has yet to receive the investigators'
detailed findings. The letter said improvements are needed to
prevent patient-to-patient abuse and patient-to-staff abuse.
Officials are still trying to restore federal funds to Broughton
Hospital in Morganton that were eliminated three months ago after a
patient death and fall.
