Some school systems are trying to get an exemption for the new school calendar that starts this fall. School officials say several counties in Eastern Carolina have applied for a waiver. The state board is recommending approval for all high schools, who applied for the waiver but not middle schools or elementary schools.
The board is expected to make its ruling Thursday. Officials say systems applying for the waiver must fall under one of two categories. Those categories are missing eight or more days of school each year because of bad weather, or there must be a pressing educational concern. Most counties are citing courses that need to work with their community college system needed for students to graduate.
There are seven school systems in Eastern Carolina that have applied for the waiver. They are Beaufort County, Edenton-Chowan schools, Edgecombe County, Halifax, Martin, Nash-Rocky Mount schools, and Perquimans County schools.
