Sand management efforts are helping reshape Carteret County's high dollar oceanfront. Two projects have pumped sand from the Morehead City State port and Beaufort Inlet Channel on the East end of Bogue Banks. That sand is being placed all along Atlantic Beach's oceanfront to widen the beach for extra storm protection. It's also, of course, an investment in Carteret County's number one industry, tourism. Carteret County pays for the sand effort and tourism development from the same source which is a 50/50 split of the county's room occupancy tax.
