Yachts Head South

The snowbirds are headed south again. But these migrants are flying close to the coast, and a lot lower than the birds.

This is the annual migration of the snowbird fleet, yachts headed from up north down the coast to warmer southern ports for the winter. And some of those boaters are finding it tricky going, with shoaling and low water in the intracoastal waterway causing some groundings and damage.

But local marinas, boat-towing services and the Coast Guard all say Eastern Carolina's water highway is easier to navigate, if folks just ask for some directions from the locals. The one place everyone is telling boaters to avoid is Bogue Inlet, where dredging work could begin soon to relocate the channel.
