A North Carolina woman has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for tricking two elderly women in Illinois into giving her their personal information and then using it to loot their bank accounts.
Aretha Antoine was accused of taking $116,000 from bank accounts
belonging to 75-year-old Janet Stein and 80-year-old Charlotte
Prosecutors the victims received repeated phone calls from people who requested or said they needed to confirm identification information for various companies and the Illinois Secretary of State's Office.
Antoine used the information to transfer money from the women's
real bank accounts into ones she created online.
The two women were the only victims cited in the case. But according to court filings, authorities found personal information for nearly 1,000 people in Antoine's apartment in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
