Enloe Students Win $50,000 At National Science Competition

Three students from Enloe High School will share a $50,000 scholarship after taking second place in one of the country's top science competitions.

The students -- Vivek Bhattacharya, Hao Lian and Daniel Vitek -- won first place in a regional competition before nearly winning the Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology in New York.

The teenagers developed a computer model that helps scientists
determine which gene sequences to use to produce specific proteins.
The research could provide a cost-effective way to commercially
produce useful proteins such as insulin.

The trio was mentored by North Carolina State University professors.
Daniel is a junior and hopes to compete in the Siemens Competition next year. Vivek and Hao are seniors, ranked first and second respectively at their an academically rigorous magnet school.
