Pronounced Dead But Still Alive

He was thought to have died after being hit by a car. But the Franklin County man was found to still be alive almost two hours later.

Larry Green of Louisburg was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, but was discovered breathing by a medical examiner. How could a mistake like this happen?

Brody School of Medicine forensic pathologist Doctor MGF Gilliand, who says while what happened is extremely rare, several factors can come into play, especially if paramedics don't follow on-scene procedures.

Pitt County officials say they always transfer trauma patients to the hospital before going to the morgue to see if they can be revived.

Green remains in critical condition at Duke University Medical Center in Durham. The four paramedics who responded to the scene were all suspended with pay pending an investigation.
