Investigators are still looking into what caused the fire that destroyed an Outer Banks restaurant owned by state Sen. Marc Basnight.
An official cause of the May 1 blaze that destroyed Basnight's Lone Cedar Cafe remains unclear because a public report hasn't been
released. The family-owned restaurant was rebuilt in late August
and has resumed business.
State law requires investigators to send a written report on the cause and origin of a fire to the state Attorney General's Office within a week of an incident. That wasn't done, and state and local officials are placing the responsibility on each other.
Investigators told Basnight in September they believed the fire was caused by arson, but Dare County Fire Marshal Doug Remaley said he believes the blaze was caused by a broken gas line. Remaley says he hasn't heard from the State Bureau of Investigation, which he said took over the fire investigation.
