We'll keep fighting. That's the decision the Bertie County School Board reached on a 34-year lawsuit that's created quite a bit of controversy. After hearing comments from some unhappy parents and consulting in a closed session, Bertie County Board of Education members voted not to close the county's predominantly white elementary school, Askewville, despite a pending lawsuit claiming it’s not racially balanced. Those opposed to closing the school say the neighborhoods are mostly white and it's demographically impossible to have a complete racial balance. Following Monday's discussion, the school board will continue its legal dispute with the United States Department of Justice.
