Possible Cigarette Tax

Is the tax on a pack of cigarettes going up? As the North Carolina General Assembly convenes next week and confronts a potential $1,000,000,000 budget gap, many believe the nation's largest tobacco-growing state is ready to raise the tax from its current rate, a nickel a pack.

Neighboring Virginia raised its tax to 20 cents last year, and will make it 30 cents this summer.

Across the nation, the average state cigarette tax is 84 cents per pack.
