The Greenville Utilities Commission has sent out more than 28,000 warning letters concerning drinking water. That is all of Greenville Utilities Customers, more than 75,000 people.
GUC tested 106 houses and found that 26 of them, nearly 25 percent, had dangerously high levels of lead. Officials are also a little baffled about how this problem came about. They say they've been testing the water since 1991 and have never had a problem like this with lead.
However in 2002, the GUC changed how they treat some of their water. Utilities officials say you can have your water tested for lead for free. You have to call 252-551-1551.
Studies are already underway to fix the problem and to see what other treatment options are available to cut down on the lead problem.
