A North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper is in critical condition after a wreck in Union County.
Trooper Jeffery Wren was recovering Friday after emergency
surgery at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. He was flown to the hospital from the accident scene Thursday.
Authorities say Wren was chasing a car driven by a South Carolina teenager who was speeding. Both drivers lost control on a steep hill near the South Carolina border, and Wren's patrol car flipped over and landed on its top.
Trooper Mark Helms said Friday he has never seen a patrol car suffer as much damage in his 20 years in law enforcement.
Helms says the teen will likely be charged with fleeing to elude a law enforcement officer.
