The Pitt County Sheriff's Department needs a new jail, and they need it now.

Jail administration officials say the overcrowding is at critical levels, jeopardizing the safety of other inmates, staff and visitors. Officials say the 404 bed facility was recently found in violation of overcrowding by the state jail inspector.

Some inmates are being sent to Edgecombe County for temporary housing. Officials say that helps the problem for now, but a permanent solution needs to be addressed.
