Rice Is Chosen as Powell's Replacement

President Bush has nominated national security adviser Condoleezza Rice to become the next secretary of state. Rice will replace Colin Powell, who has resigned. Rice will be replaced by her deputy, Stephen Hadley.

Bush says Rice will take office at a critical time for the country. But he says the world will see in her the country's strength, grace and dignity.

Rice says she looks forward to pursuing the president's "hopeful and ambitious" agenda as secretary of state. And she says it's an honor to be asked to serve her country once again.
