New Bern Police are puzzled Saturday morning after they say one of their own was blind-sided by an unprovoked assault from a citizen Friday.

Lawmen say an officer-- who they are not naming at this time was attacked by Damon Kenny of 611 Julia Street, while the officer responded to the residence in reference to a breaking and entering just before nine Friday night. Upon arrival the officer says Kenny approached him, and hit him in the face, neck and head area with his fist. Kenny has since been jailed under a 15,000 dollar secured bond. The officer is recovering after being treated at Craven Regional Hospital. Kenny has been charged with 1 felony and 3 misdemeanors relating to the incident.
