In Onslow County and all across Eastern Carolina, the community paused to remember veterans of wars past and in the present as well. And along with veterans from World War Two, Korea, and Vietnam, Thursday's ceremony at the Coastal State Veterans cemetery honored younger veterans of the war on terror, including local marines and sailors fighting in Iraq now.
The older vets say young faces in their ranks brings out mixed emotions of pride, and some sadness as well. Onslow County has one of the state's biggest veterans populations, with nearly one in four adults who live there now claiming the title, 'Veteran.'
