Stocks Firm, Shopping Season Off To Busy Start

After opening on the downside, the key stock market averages have turned higher. There's no economic data due today as Wall Street comes back to work.

Some preliminary indications about the start of the holiday shopping season are positive. ShopperTrak, which tracks sales at more than 50,000 U.S. retail outlets, says that sales on Friday and Saturday combined rose more than 7 percent from the same period a year ago.
