Troopers Say SUV Driver Ran Stop Sign, Struck School Bus

A ten year old student from Banks Elementary School was killed this morning after the SUV the child was in collided with a school bus.

Authorities say Thomas Suggs, Jr. died at the scene of the accident, while his father, the driver of the SUV, was critically injured.

The special needs bus heading to LaGrange Elementary School in Lenoir crashed with the SUV around 7:45 a.m. Monday.

State troopers say the SUV driver ran a stop sign and struck the bus, causing it to flip over. It happened in the 4400 block of Wheat Swamp Road.

A Lenoir County Schools spokeswoman says there were 2 special needs students, an adult assistant and a driver on the bus. All were taken to Lenoir Memorial Hospital to be check out and have since been released.

The school system says the bus was a total loss.
