Holiday Tragedies

A 12-year-old boy from Craven County is dead, another injured, after a shooting on Christmas day. Officials say the boys were hit when Derick Hembry, from Pamlico County, fired at a pile of trash in a backyard and a round richocheted and struck their car. The 9-year-old was airlifted to Pitt County Memorial Hospital. Hembry is behind bars, charged with one count of homicide. Officials say his first court appearance is Tuesday, and other charges are possible. Meanwhile, a 14-year-old boy from Jacksonville Sunday today from head injuries he suffered skiing at Snowshoe Mountain Resort in West Virginia earlier in the week. The teenager was wearing a helmet when he crashed on an expert slope on Wednesday. Officials have not released his name.
