With the beautiful foliage drying across the east an ugly situation is arising.

As one family in Washington County learned Saturday, trash burning is a dangerous chore as Eastern Carolina land begins to dry out this fall, creating a fast burning fire hazard for those who dispose of garbage by burning it. Their home off Highway 32 near the Beaufort-Washington County line was within feet of catching fire Saturday, a situation first responders say can be avoided by drenching a surrounding area of land around trash before you burn it, and keeping a close eye on the situation.

Fire crews say when it comes to burning trash in the county, residents should burn no more than 100 feet from their property, and keep water handy in case a fire gets out of control.
