The Highway Patrol in Pitt County was jammed with accident calls all day Monday that started in the early morning hours.
Authorities say there have been so many accidents in the county troopers have had a hard time keeping up. One trooper even said motorists were abandoning their cars because it took so long for people to get help.
As the day ended and temperatures fell, wet roads turned icy, causing more dangerous conditions.
