An Associated Press exit poll shows Easley attracted voters who believe better economic times are around the corner. Ballantine fought back tears during his concession speech, saying its been "one heck of a ride."

First District Democratic Congressman G.K. Butterfield has retained his seat. Butterfield defeated Republican challenger Greg Dority.
Third District Republican Congressman Walter Jones Jr. defeats Democrat Roger Eaton.
