A winter storm warning goes into effect at 7 a.m. Friday for Beaufort, Dare, mainland Hyde, Martin, Tyrrell and Washington counties. A winter storm advisory goes into effect at 7 a.m. Friday for the rest of Eastern Carolina. The threats are snow, sleet and freezing rain.
Several children in the care of the state also depend on the help of others to have a happy holiday.
The Pitt County Social Services Office is accepting new, unwrapped toys and electronics for children currently in the foster care system.
It's their Annual Holiday Cheer Fund to provide each child in the system a present for Christmas.
Right now there are 146 children, from just a few months old to 18 years of age.
Social workers tell us it's a task which can be difficult when there are so many kids to help and donations are few.
"It can sometimes be a little disheartening, " says Mildred Daniels, a Social Worker for Pitt County. "When it seems like donations might be slow coming in, and you just wait until the end. And we really just don't have enough to go around to all of our children."
Daniels say she hopes to get unwrapped toys in before December 10th.
If you would like to send a check or money order, please make payable to Pitt County Department of Social Services and earmark it "Foster Children's Christmas." Mail or deliver your donation to Pitt County Department of Social Services; 1717 W 5th Street, Greenville, NC 27834.
