Working the Polls Since the 1950s

One Lenoir County election volunteer says she has seen it all and is ready to take on the challenges of Election Day once again.

Mary Jeffress says she's worked on elections since the 1950s. For 24 years, she worked at the Board of Elections until she retired seven years ago when she started volunteering.

Jeffress says when she came to work in 1974, she had one typewriter and nothing else. There were no voting machines and no fax. Jeffress says she's happy to see more people are concerned about the elections process.
