Cleanup From Fuel Spill Continues

Work continues to cleanup the area where more than 7,000 gallons of diesel fuel spilled after a tanker accident on Highway 264 in Pitt County last week.

Officials with the Department of Transportation estimate damage from the spill to be several hundred thousand of dollars.

Bill Kincannon with the Pitt County office says the accident took a huge toll on the roadway and the surrounding environment. Kincannon says the pavement and several sections of guardrail near the spill site will have to be replaced. He also says soil close to the area is saturated with fuel and will also have to be dug up and replaced.
