While children across the country are counting down the days until Christmas, students at Belvoir Elementary School in Pitt County are counting pennies. So far they've collected nearly 25,000 for a program called "Pennies for Patients." The coins will benefit cancer patients at the Leo W. Jenkins Cancer Center at Pitt County Memorial Hospital.

Thursday, the student government association presented the Jenkins Cancer Center staff with a check for nearly $477. One second grader called everyone she knew and was the top fundraiser at the school.
