Jacksonville's disabled veterans gathered Saturday, to honor fallen veterans at a special memorial, and also to say thanks to 4 city police officers, for risking their lives last year, to try to save a fellow vet.

The 4 policemen were given Chaplain's Cross medals, for diving into a frozen pond to try to save a car accident victim last February, who later died. The honor was part of Saturday's rededication of the Disabled American Veteran's Chapter 16 Memorial Wall. Bagpipes wailed as marines from Camp Lejeune raised an American flag that flew over Afghanistan in 2001. Others fired a salute to the local vets, and to new veterans of the war on terror who are returning to their base community with injuries. The D.A.V. says it is ready to help.

The memorial wall contains hundreds of names of former chapter vets in Jacksonville and Onslow County, who've died after serving their community and America in the military services.
