Bridging the Gap

Schools across Eastern Carolina are expanding their "English as a Second Language" programs as students from more parts of the world speaking more languages make their way here.

Wayne County school officials say the number of students speaking Chinese has exploded. It's now second only to Spanish. With so many students speaking the difficult language, 18 teachers have decided to learn conversational Chinese. Teachers say they now have a new respect for their Chinese students learning English.

School officials say many Chinese people are moving to the area to work in the food service industry or for Carolina Turkey. That company employs 120 Chinese workers.
