Learning to Navigate the Open Seas

Some Hatteras Island teens took part in Coast Guard aerial maneuvers this week in an effort to make Eastern Carolina waters safer for everyone.

Cape Hatteras Secondary students are learning to conduct themselves safely on the water, thanks to a new class being offered by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

This week, teens split up in the Croatan Sound with volunteers for a simulated rescue situation. Student Rom Whitaker says the classes could be useful to young adults of all interests.

This was just one of several field trips, where students are learning navigation, knot- tying and even engine basics, so they can make quick repairs in the event of a break down at sea.
