Three Green Berets have won Silver Star medals and three others received Bronze Stars for their part in a battle last year in Afghanistan.

The six soldiers fought with nine others from the 7th Special
Forces Group on June 23-24, 2006, in Operation Kaika. The Army says
the mission became a 17-hour battle that killed about 125 Taliban
members.

One soldier was killed in the battle and his medal was presented
to his wife and son.

Capt. Sheffield Ford III of Dixon, Calif., and retired Staff
Sgt. Matthew Binney of Payson, Ariz., received Silver Stars, as did
the family of Master Sgt. Thomas D. Maholic of Bradford, Pa. Bronze Star winners were Sgt. 1st Class Ebbon E. Brown of
Annapolis, Md.; Staff Sgt. Charles Lyles of St. Petersburg, Fla.;
and Staff Sgt. Michael Sanabria of Cleburne, Texas.
