A Nash County man pled guilty in federal court in Greenville this week to child pornography charges.

Federal prosecutors say Gerald Thomas Smith of Spring Hope pled guilty to one count of transporting child pornography over the internet and one count of transporting obscene material over the internet.

Smith was arrested in a grocery store in 2006 when a store employee noticed him there with a child that did not belong to him, and thought something was wrong. The employee contacted police who discovered Smith had prior convictions related to sexual abuse of kids.

Smith faces 15 to 40 years when sentenced next year.
