Snow and ice have begun forming high in the Smoky Mountains, closing U.S. Highway 441 through the national park for the first time this season.
The Newfound Gap Road running from Gatlinburg to Cherokee, North Carolina, is closed along with the road to Clingman's Dome, Tennessee's highest point.
In Gatlinburg, there was a little snow this afternoon but it did not stick. The temperature in the resort town was 33 just before sunset.
The National Weather Service in Morristown has issued a forecast calling for snow showers in upper elevations of East Tennessee from the Virginia border through the Smokies.
Between two to four inches was expected on U.S. 441. Other smaller roads have already closed for the winter.
