Christmas Tree Safety

Updated: Mon 9:11 PM, Dec 06, 2004

Christmas trees are supposed to be decorative during the holiday season, not destructive. But each year, thousands of people lose their homes, or even their lives, because their tree caught on fire.

We talked to one tree expert who says do not place your tree near any open flames. You must also add a quart of water a day to the base of the tree to keep it moist. And make sure you place your tinsel away from the lights because it may be made with metal.

If you hang lights outside your home, experts say make sure you buy lights that are safe for outside use. They also suggest you plug in all lights into a surge protector which regulates the amount of current flowing through the wires.
