Digging Into History

Graduate students from ECU's School of Anthropology are trying to help identify graves at Washington's Beebe Park. They're looking for unmarked graves believed to be from the 1700s to 1800s.

City of Washington officials say they asked the school to research the site so the city would know what park improvements they could make. City officials want to assure the public once the research is complete, the dirt will be put back and the graves will not be disturbed.

Before the dig, graduate students interviewed residents in the area, to find out as much history as they could about the park and who may be buried there.
