AAA Carolinas says Tarboro is the safest city of its size in North Carolina for traffic safety.
The Foundation honored Tarboro along with Huntersville and Highlands for its efforts to improve traffic safety in 2006.
Huntersville earned the top place for traffic safety for cities with a population greater than 30,000. Tarboro was the winner in the 10,000 to 30,000-population category. Highlands won for the the less than 10,000 population category.
The Foundation chose the top cities based on crash statistics, number of law enforcement officers per capita, presence of a formal traffic safety program and existence of a special traffic division. The Center for Transportation Policy Studies at UNC Charlotte performed the statistical analysis.
