Diving for Stolen Cars

Some sheriffs deputies swapped their badges and guns for scuba tanks and flippers Thursday to search an abandoned gravel pit in Pender County for a pair of stolen cars.

A hot tip had Onslow County's sheriff's dive team in some cold water, 55-degree water, in fact. But finding those cars in 10 to 30 feet of water made things a lot warmer for the divers and a whole lot hotter for the thieves who dumped the cars there.

Onslow Sheriff Ed Brown says the dive team members have paid for most of their own gear.
