The North Carolina State Board of Election met Tuesday to decide the fate of some 4,400 votes in Carteret County. They decided to allow a special election for early voters whose ballots were lost due to a machine malfunction.
The race for State Agricultural Commissioner puts Republican Steve Troxler ahead by only 2,342 votes out of the three million votes cast. Democrat Britt Cobb is the incumbent.
The special election could change the outcome of that race. The election board did not set a date for the special election.
