When a slab of rock dislodged along the New River Trail, killing a cyclist from North Carolina, park officials were in a situation they'd never experienced. They didn't release any details about the death of 48-year-old Sudie Jenkins Hatcher of High Point, North Carolina, until 48 hours
after it happened on October 20th.
Meanwhile, bikers, hikers and horseback riders continued using the same section of the trail, near Austinville in Wythe County, Virginia.
A spokesman for the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation says officials didn't believe the area posed a further danger.
The New River Trail's park manager says both serious injuries and falling rocks are rare along the park, which runs along the New River from Pulaski to Galax.
