Authorities say seven people were killed early Sunday when a fire swept through a beach house in the resort community of Ocean Isle Beach.
The mayor, Debbie Smith, says six others were treated and released from a hospital, including one survivor who jumped from the burning home and into an adjacent waterway.
Mayor Smith said officials had accounted for everyone believed to be inside the home.
She says that to the best of her knowledge, all those at the house were college students, most from the University of South Carolina.
She says one may have attended Clemson University.
Nick Cain is a University of North Carolina student who was staying at a house about 100 feet from the fire. He says the home was "totally engulfed" a little before 7 a.m.
Cain says many of the students staying at the house appeared to be from the University of South Carolina.
A spokesman for USC says the university is in touch with Ocean Isle Beach officials but has no solid information.
